Autism assessments are conducted in welcoming clinics in Hartley Wintney, Hampshire and near Chelmsford, Essex.
These are designed to put our clients at ease, allowing for discreet consultation within comfortable spaces in village locations.
What to expect…
Pre-assessment:
Our assessing clinician will have a relaxed, short initial call with you to answer questions you may have, discuss any accommodations for your child during the assessment, and clarify any information prior to the appointment.
Questionnaires are sent in advance to be completed by parents and the adult that knows the child best in their school. This helps to gather a full picture of a child’s developmental history thus far and for parents and teachers to provide context from their settings.
During the assessment:
The assessment focuses on key areas related to autism such as social interaction and communication, sensory processing, emotional needs, behaviours, and interests. You and your child will be welcomed by the clinician and made to feel comfortable. Some children may wish to bring a favourite toy or object.
The assessment consists of observations and a play/question-based standardised assessment, the Autistic Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). Assessments generally last one hour.
After the assessment:
Information gathered within the assessment is considered along with what was shared by the parent in the initial discussion and the parent and teacher questionnaires.
Within 6 weeks, a comprehensive report is sent to you that clearly indicates when a diagnosis is made. In some cases we may ask for more information or clarification prior to finalising the report. The report summarises findings and details strengths and weaknesses of the child, recommendations on support and specific strategies to support your child further.
Our assessors:
All assessors are ADOS qualified professionals from a range of disciplines including Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Advanced Nurse Practitioners.
Prior to the assessment you will speak with the assessor conducting your child’s appointment. You can also see all of our team here.
